Sevenths

A generic seventh is an interval spanning seven adjacent notes in the scale sequence. The quality of the seventh is determined by the number of half-steps between the notes. A major seventh is comprised of eleven half-steps. A minor seventh is comprised of one less half-step than a major seventh, or ten half-steps.

A major seventh can be altered by adding a half-step. The interval would then become an augmented seventh. Similarly, a minor seventh can be altered by subtracting a half-step. The interval would then become a diminished seventh. The following table shows all of the sevenths for the C harmonic minor scale.
